A Peaceful Farewell: What to Expect with Loving Legacy Vet

Updated: Apr 24

Choosing to say goodbye to a cherished member of your family is a profound act of love. At Loving Legacy Vet, we are honoured to help you provide a "good death"—a peaceful, easy transition in the place where your pet feels most secure.

In-home pet euthanasia is a growing choice for families who want to honour their pet's life in a familiar environment. To help you prepare for our visit, here is a guide on how we work together to honour your pet’s legacy.

The Loving Legacy Process

We believe that your pet deserves the highest level of care during their final moments. Our process is designed to be gentle, clinical, and compassionate:

  • Expert Medical Care: Your appointment is conducted by a licensed veterinarian who provides the same clinical standards as a hospital but with the intimacy of a home visit.

  • A Gentle Start: We begin by getting to know your pet—and yes, that often includes lots of cookies! We then administer tailored pre-medications, including sedatives and pain relievers, so your pet can drift into a deep, relaxed sleep.

  • Prioritizing Readiness: We monitor your pet’s comfort closely and will not proceed to the final step until you and your pet are truly ready.

  • A Painless Transition: We use a specialized barbiturate to quickly and quietly depress brain activity, ensuring a departure free from stress or pain.

  • Understanding the Process: If involuntary movements like twitching or a final large breath occur, please know these are natural post-consciousness releases of energy, not a sign of discomfort or "fighting" the process. Often times, they eyes do not fully close. This is normal.

Creating a Meaningful Environment

Once the initial formalities and paperwork are complete, the space belongs entirely to you and your pet. At home, your pet can remain where they are most comfortable, away from the anxiety of a clinic setting.

  • Set the Mood: We encourage you to play favourite music, light candles, or share stories and prayers that honour your pet's unique life.

  • Involve the Family: You are welcome to have other household pets or close friends present to say their own goodbyes in a private, familiar setting.

  • Grieve Authentically: Our goal is to provide a sanctuary where you don't have to "keep it together" or interact with office staff. You are free to begin your healing process in the comfort of your own home.

Respectful Aftercare

We are committed to carrying out your final wishes with the utmost dignity.

  • Cremation Services: We maintain professional relationships with a trusted crematorium provider to facilitate a respectful transfer and the return of remains if desired. Ashes will be hand delivered to you at home once they are available.

  • Home Burial: If you prefer a private burial, we will leave your pet in your care. We recommend having the site ready before the appointment and reviewing local laws to ensure the gravesite is secure from wildlife.

  • Lasting Tributes: To help maintain a connection to your pet, we can assist with creating keepsakes such as ink paw prints or locks of fur.

  • Memorial Posts: If you would like a memorial post for your pet, please let us know. We would be happy to share a favourite photo and meaningful sentiments to honour their memory.

Supporting Your Journey Through Grief

Saying goodbye is a significant loss, and we believe no one should have to walk this road alone. We provide grieving resources customized to the unique needs of you and your family members:

At Loving Legacy Vet, we believe that providing this final gift is the ultimate expression of your bond. Please be kind to yourself as you navigate this significant loss.

With deepest sympathy,

Dr. Jenna Shivers
